Woman at Center of Infamous Gay Meme Identifies Herself

Author: Neal Broverman

We’ve all seen it by now: the image of a young woman, seemingly alone and adrift amid a sea of half-naked, canoodling men.

The picture has been meme’d innumerable times, wordlessly conveying the feeling of being single or, simply, invisible and out of place. The latest meme to take hold was captioned by Twitter user Mikey Almeida: “olivia rodrigo with her fans.” Almeida was referring to the teenage pop star, who has already earned a big gay following with her hit single, “Drivers License.”

Then a woman named Amruta Godbole retweeted Almeida’s meme and wrote, “I’m in this photo and I don’t like. Jk. I mean that is actually me in the photo. But I like it every time.”

Godbole, a San Francisco-based attorney, provided the backstory on the imfamous photo.

Look out, Olivia Rodrigo, there’s a new gay icon on the block.
