Peppermint & WNBA’s Chelsea Gray on LGBTQ+ History & ‘How We Got Here’
Activist and drag star Peppermint and the WNBA’s Chelsea Gray and her wife, Tipesa Moorer, teamed up with the forward-thinking network Freeform for a video series about LGBTQ+ history and the intersections of being Black and queer. The series, which features Karen Hawkins and Tre’vell Anderson as well, also focuses on those in history who pushed boundaries in terms of gender presentation.
The mini history series dubbed “How We Got Here” is part of Freeform’s Pride Month campaign that’s packed with tidbits of Black queer history dating back to the Compton’s Cafeteria and Black Cat riots.
Peppermint, Gray, and Moorer walk viewers through a series of events beginning in the 1960s and through to the Supreme Court decision that legalized marriage equality in 2015 in the first installment.

The second video in the series, called “Bending Gender Norms,” features Peppermint, Gray, Moorer, and Anderson discussing people in history including the first Black drag queen, and WNBA star Britney Griner.

In the final video of the series, titled “Where Words Meet Action,” Hawkins and Anderson illuminate the intersections of being Black and queer, highlighting Bayard Rustin, James Baldwin, Linda Villarosa, and more.
