Kristen Stewart Is a Troubled Princess Diana in ‘Spencer’ Trailer

The official trailer has dropped for Spencer, the Princess Diana biopic starring Kristen Stewart, and it’s haunting.

The trailer, set to evocative music, portrays a distraught Diana during the Christmas holidays at the royal family’s Sandringham Estate as she makes up her mind to leave her marriage to Prince Charles. The official description of the film calls it “an imagining of what might have happened during those few fateful days.”

Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life,” Stewart said in an earlier release from Neon, the movie’s distributor.

Spencer’s director is Pablo Larraín, who helmed the critically acclaimed 2016 Natalie Portman starrer Jackie, about First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Spencer also features Poldark antagonist Jack Farthing as Charles, Niklas Kohrt as Prince Andrew, and Olga Hellsing as Sarah Ferguson, along with Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall, and Sean Harris in roles not yet disclosed.

Plus Amy Manson appears as Anne Boleyn, the second wife of 16th-century British monarch Henry VIII; Boleyn ended up beheaded. Manson has noted the oddity of the storyline, given the hundreds of years separating Anne and Diana, but has revealed no other details except that the film will be “a great universal story.”

Diana was a direct descendant of Anne’s sister, Mary Boleyn, who was Henry VIII’s mistress before he married Anne. Mary Boleyn was Diana’s 13th great-grandmother. Also, like Anne, Diana had a sister who was involved with her future husband — Lady Sarah Spencer, now McCorquodale, was one of Charles’s girlfriends before his marriage to Diana.

Spencer is out in theaters November 5. Take a look at the trailer below.
