Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Vow Change on Trans Day of Remembrance

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris commemorated Transgender Day of Remembrance, the event honoring trans and gender-nonconforming victims of violence.
At least 37 trans and GNC folks were killed this year, the majority of them people of color. The president-elect noted this in a Friday tweet while also pledging to enact change to prevent future deaths.
“It’s intolerable,” Biden stated of the death count: “This Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor their lives — and recommit to the work that remains to end this epidemic of violence.”

Biden also spoke directly to this at-risk community. “To transgender and gender-nonconforming people across America and around the world: from the moment I am sworn in as president, know that my administration will see you, listen to you, and fight for not only your safety but also the dignity and justice you have been denied.”
Harris reiterated this vow for change in her own tweet: “Today and every day we must recommit to ending this epidemic.”

During the lead-up to the presidential election, The Advocate had endorsed Biden since he ran the most pro-LGBTQ+ platform of any major-party nominee in the history of the United States. In his plan for LGBTQ+ equality, he promises to make enactment of the Equality Act during his first 100 days as president a top legislative priority; reverse the transgender military ban as well as military policies that discriminate against people with HIV; work to end suicide among LGBTQ+ youth; end the misuse of religious exemptions to enable discrimination; address violence against LGBTQ+ people (something especially affecting transgender women of color); and more.
