House Dems Introduce Resolution to Boot George Santos

Democratic lawmakers took the first step toward removing New York Rep. George Santos from Congress after continued revelations that he lied about his education, career, and campaign funds, among other things.

Representative Robert Garcia of California announced Thursday that fellow House Democrats are pushing to expel the embattled congressman amid a growing number of scandals.

Even though Santos lied about his qualifications, Republicans who control the lower chamber will likely defend his right to remain in Congress to protect their slim majority of four seats.

“Enough is enough,” said Garcia, the gay Democrat who has been front and center in calling out Republicans for their antics.

“We just filed an official resolution to expel George Santos from Congress,” he wrote in a statement on Twitter.

“It’s time for Republicans to get on board and join us in removing this fraud from the House,” he said.

On Friday, Garcia also tweeted an image of the resolution while calling Speaker Kevin McCarthy to kick Santos out.

“The expulsion resolution I filed with a group of colleagues is simple, and it’s time for George Santos to resign,” Garcia wrote. “Now it’s up to Kevin McCarthy to act, or we will work to force the resolution on the House floor.”

The resolution would need the support of 290 House members to pass.

For his part, Santos has remained steadfast in his decision to stay in his position. Although he stepped down from all of his committee assignments to avoid being a distraction, Santos has spent time attempting to troll people on Twitter.

Garcia, an admitted social media super-user, came after Santos with gusto.

“Me to George Santos after submitting a bill to expel him from congress today,” he tweeted with a meme from RuPaul’s Drag Race highlighting Santos’s drag name, Kitara Rivache.

Responding to reporters’ questions about the resolution after it was filed, the congressman claimed not to know Garcia.

“I don’t even know who Robert Garcia is,” he said. “He believes in silencing the electorate of the United States.”

Santos is the subject of multiple local, federal, state, and international investigations.
