Franklin Graham calls for “God’s Army” to intervene in Georgia to save Republicans
In the leadup to the runoff elections for the two U.S. Senate seats representing Georgia, evangelical leader Franklin Graham has stepped up his attack on LGBTQ rights and equality.
Using his Facebook, which reaches approximately 10 million people alone, Graham called for his followers to “rally God’s Army” to prevent the possible adoption of the Equality Act, a proposed pro-LGBTQ equality bill.
“Christians who believe the Bible and live in Georgia – the soul of our nation is at stake,” Graham declared on December 27. “I ask you to rally God’s army to PRAY and VOTE in this run-off for the Senate.”
“If conservatives lose control of the Senate, there is nothing to stop the radical agenda of the left. There will not be another chance to get this right. The nation is depending on you.”
He called keeping a Republican majority in the Senate “the last line of defense” to present the supposed Democratic “radical, wicked agenda that is trying to take control of our nation.”
Then, he directly attacked the Equality Act, calling it one of the policies that “promise to be openly hostile to those who hold Christian beliefs.”
“Liberal, so called progressives, immediately want to pass the Equality Act, which is anything but equal,” Graham claimed. “It is an attempt to rid our country of religious freedom protections.”
Graham continues scaremongering, writing “this is dangerous. This would change our nation at its very foundation – and yes, it would also greatly change your everyday life.
“It will vastly alter the America that we leave for our children and grandchildren.”
He also made several other posts referencing Joe Biden and the Georgia elections, even directly criticizing Reverend Raphael Warnock (D), who is running against Senator Kelly Loeffler (R).
In a January 1st post, he called Rev. Warnock’s pro-abortion policies an “unbiblical position.”
“When a church leader calls evil good and good evil, he confuses and misleads the flock,” Graham said.
Graham is the son of the 20th century’s most powerful evangelical, Billy Graham, the CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and the head of the nonprofit Samaritan’s Purse – where he draws a six-figure salary and bans LGBTQ people as volunteers.
Graham invoked his late father while claiming that Biden would lead America to a “dark winter” due to a “moral decline” that will supposedly begin when the Biden, a Catholic, is inaugurated.
“LGBTQ activists within the Democratic Party are pushing their godless, secular agenda with a potential Biden Administration,” Graham alleged in a post in November. “If they are allowed free reign, they will go after the accreditation of Christian colleges, then Christian ministries and churches next, to strip them of tax-exempt status and try to force them to operate under policies that go against biblical teaching.
“This is not only an attack on free speech and expression, but also an attack on our religious liberty,” Graham continued.
Graham was referencing the Human Rights Campaign and their Blueprint for Positive Change proposal, which consists of “85 individual policy recommendations aimed at improving the lives of LGBTQ people.”
Graham threw his support behind Donald Trump throughout his 2016 campaign and ascension to the Presidency, and most of the evangelical community followed suit. Now, Graham is still firmly behind Trump, although he is slated to leave the White House this month and his evangelical base has waned.
“President Trump will go down in history as one of the great presidents of our nation, bringing peace and prosperity to millions,” Graham said in the beginning of December, even claiming that Trump “brought back ‘Merry’s Christmas!’”
In October, he railed against the Pope for suggesting that same-sex couples “have a right to a family.”
“For Pope Francis to attempt to normalize homosexuality is to say that Holy Scriptures are false, that our sins really don’t matter, and that we can continue living in them…. No one has the right or the authority to trivialize Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf,” Graham wrote in response.
In June, he declared in response to Dr. Anthony Fauci’s comments on right-wing bias that “Science isn’t truth. God is.”
Earlier in 2020, the Samaritan’s Purse field hospital was closed by New York City after it turned away a gay man trying to volunteer. In May, Graham shrugged it off, saying “One thing is 100% certain—we will all die.”
