Did Joe Biden’s Acceptance Speech Include ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Shout-Out?
There were plenty of reasons to be excited about the victory of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, but fans of Emmy Award-winning series Schitt’s Creek went wild over a particular moment following Biden’s victory speech Saturday night in his hometown of Wilmington, Del.
As fireworks and drone light displays lit up the sky over the Chase Center, many viewers — including Schitt’s Creek creator and star Dan Levy himself — couldn’t help but notice that one of the songs featured was Tina Turner’s “The Best,” the 1989 single that became the soundtrack to two pivotal scenes about the show’s central love story.
The Canadian comedy became a viral hit over its six-season run, largely because of its positive representation of queer relationships and its rejection of homophobia, and went on to sweep the Comedy category at the 2020 Emmy Awards.
In case you haven’t watched it yet for some weird reason, in season 4 Levy’s character David Rose is serenaded at an open-mic night by his new love interest, Patrick Brewer (Noah Reid), who performs an acoustic version of “The Best.” Later in the season, in an effort to win Patrick back after a conflict that threatens their relationship, David dances and lip-syncs to the radio edit of Turner’s song in a scene that became one of the most memorable turning points of the show.
Needless to say, when the song began playing at the Biden-Harris victory rally in a playlist that also included Mary J. Blige, Coldplay, and Hall & Oates, many people caught the reference — particularly since Nielsen’s most-streamed list shows that Schitt’s Creek is experiencing a new surge of popularity after the Emmys.

Tina Turner would be one of the highlights of any victory playlist, of course, but we suspect that someone in the Biden campaign knew exactly what they were doing.
