11 Photos and a Dream of Galveston by Derick Whitson

Derick’s work includes clowning, drag, race, gender, and the history that gets buried. “A spirit came to visit me. This time it was in Galveston, Texas. I felt awake, paralyzed. I tried to climb out of bed, onto my feet. I couldn’t stand at first, the presence held me down. I then stood up, a man stood over me, he was white, slightly chubby with an average face. He frightened me, he looked at me and said, here, have some orange juice and Red Bull. I told him I didn’t want any, I said no thank you. He insisted, he tried to force me, I pretended to swallow. He then took a pill, he swallowed it. He said he would wake up soon, and so would I. He started to foam at the mouth, I then laid him down. This man became passive, this is when I could escape, I then woke up.” — Derick Whitson
